If you can tear yourself away from the beach and the myriad water activities, St John offers a wealth of interesting places for archaeology buffs. Top on the "must-see" list are the petroglyphs at Reef Bay. They are rock carvings believed to have been done by pre-Columbian Africans. Similar forms have been found on Libyan tombstones of the 2nd century - the double spiral shape was a purification symbol used by pre-Islamic sun worshippers (was sunny St John a vacation paradise way back then?). Jewellery in this design makes a "classy" souvenir (for those who have progressed beyond "I Slept on a Virgin" T shirts or other such mementos).
