Board of Education Sworn in Today
The Education Commission is getting down to business, meanwhile Liston Davis says that the Education Dept. is forming a task force to address teacher attendance. The kids have attendance, now they are making plans for the teachers to pass an attendance check too. The recently elected Board of Education will be sworn in today at the Legislature Building. They are going right to work after the ceremony, with an action retreat to develop a comprehensive plan to address the deficiencies in our schools.
Race Track Getting New Surface
CAHS racing track is getting resurfaced with a rubberized material. To accommodate the workers, everyone is reminded to keep of the High School track until further notice.
Net Day is Coming
Here’s the kind of news I love. The USVI Net Day 97 is being planned. The goal of Net-Day is to wire all the Virgin Islands schools for connections to the Internet. This is a volunteer project that brings together private partners, educators, business and industry together to Jump start the internal wiring of schools and raise the level of public awareness concerning our schools needs. In 1997, the Dept. will wire four schools during February, April and June including two schools on St. Croix and one each on St. Thomas and St. John. Other schools will be wired in 1997-98. Berthe C. Boschulte School Computer Classes for Parents
If you wonder what this is about, then come to one of Berthe C. Boschulte School’s Parents computer classes. The school will offer classes on Computer literacy, word processing and typing every Saturday from 9 to 11 at the school library. First class is January 18th Call 775-4987
What Does Gas Cost - Really???
We told you about gas price increases, now Alicia Barnes James, the Virgin Islands Energy Director has translated the rising cost of gas into economic terms. Each of us consumes about 330 gallons of gas a year. Everyone on St. Thomas and St. John use about 17 million gallons of gas a year. The price increases in 1996 means we spent 6.8 million dollars more for gasoline. Of course all gas is imported so all those dollars are exported. So everyone should take these gas saving tips. Don’t sit at idle with the car for more than a red lights worth of time. Idle time wastes gas. So does soft tires. Make sure your tires are correctly inflated to save gas. And regular tune ups will save gas too.

America’s Cup Challenge Seeking Donations
The Virgin Islands Challenge for the America’s Cup is facing an important deadline. They have to raise 2 million dollars in two weeks to retain the top yacht design team or risk losing them to some other team. Like everything else in competitive sports it is all about rounding up the top of the line team. Michael Bornn says the America’s Cup Challenge could generate as much as 1.8 billion for Virgin Islands economy, so there is a big opportunity at the other end of the process. Pledges are coming in. We’ll keep you posted.
Emily Conner Turns 100
Emily Conner turned 100 yesterday and she got letters of congratulations from the Queen of England. But that was small stuff compared to having her whole family come to town to celebrate. What does a centenarian do with her time. She passes some time watching Television, but she doesn’t like all the violence. That’s Emily Connor making Good news.
