WAPA says the Water is Safe
The Water and Power Authority put out a statement regarding PCB’s in the water. Every day WAPA tests its water, it’s part of normal operations of the plant. And they have to test for PCB’s. Its one of the EPA requirements. Tests of the water coming out of the desalination plant measured in parts per trillion show no discernible levels of PCB’s in the water. All PCB’s in the rum Bay area are handled in accordance with EPA and OSHA requirements.
St. John Bus Experiment
Dept. of Public Works is going to do research on Bus service on St. John. On Wednesday, the Dept. of Public Works will be running some vehicles from Coral Bay to Cruz Bay to find out how much demand there is for bus service and what kind of equipment will be needed to do the job. That’s a free trip on Wednesday for people on St. John who want bus service to come to St. John.
Health Grant to Fight Cancer
The Dept. of Health has received a five year grant in the amount of $721,894 to provide free breast cancer and cervical cancer screening. The rate of cervical cancer and breast cancer has doubled in the last ten years. This program is to insure that women of all economic levels get screened for these diseases and treated early. Because early detection really works.
Science Education Grants
The Virgin Islands Dept. of Education is inviting teachers to participate in new grant programs. National Science Foundation is looking for teachers to do innovative things with education and there are grants up to $25,000 for teachers who use new technology to bring new life to science teaching. Toshiba America has grants for teachers doing innovative things. Toshiba’s grants are for teachers in grades 7 to 12 who are creating new activities with students. Information on both grants are available via the Internet and from our Dept. of Education.
America’s Cup Challenge
The America’s Cup Challenge is making progress toward their 2 million dollar goal. They are calling on Main street businesses and hotels to come forward and make pledges to develop this part of our tourism product. The America’s Cup challenge will showcase our islands. Every one will benefit for renewing our marine industry. There’s an open house on Monday at Crown Bay. Come see Stars and Stripes. Don’t miss the boat.

On Sunday there’s a lecture about the life and times of Camille Pissarro and the Pissarro family in St. Thomas in the 1830’s That’s Sunday at 2:00 PM. The lecture is free and open to everyone.
Hebrew Congregation Honors Seven Youths
If you missed the Hebrew Congregations ceremony last night, they honored seven students who live their lives in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They are Kan Constantine of 7th day Adventist school, Ezmin George of CAHS, Revenne Krigger of Wesleyan Academy, Corey Lynch of Antilles School, Elizabeth Morales of All Saints, Latitia Nathaniel of Ivanna Eudora Kean School, and Terry St. Luce of Sts. Peter and Paul. That’s seven of our youth living in the spirit of Dr. King.
