Fiscal Responsibility is the Legislature’s Priority
At the League of Women Voters luncheon yesterday, the discussion was the legislature’s agenda. The League wants to eliminate our primary election, shorten the time between the end of registration and election day, and stop using schools as polling places so election day isn’t a school holiday. Senate President Lorraine Berry had an agenda too. She will introduce legislation to prevent senators from removing their committee paper work when they leave office. The new rules committee has nothing from the previous rules committee. Berry said fiscal responsibility will be a top priority. She has set up a tracking system to keep track of leases before the Senate.
America’s Cup Challenge Makes Progress
Good News from the America’s Cup Challenge, they raised enough money to engage the world’s top racing boat designer to build us a winning racer. Peter Holmberg is now in a position to sign on professional management and a marketing team. He has a war chest, a top designer and the solid backing of the Virgin Islands people.
Brown and Root - "We have to read the report"
Brown and Root responded to the invitation to come to Labor committee hearings by saying they need to see the report and the supporting documentation. They say the report contains only conclusions and allegations with few supporting documents or evidence.
New bus stop shelters
New bus stop shelters. Public Works installed new bus shelters. One is across from the Lucinda Millen Home, another is in Frydenhoj by the ballpark, and another is near the emergency housing in Estate Nazareth. The new bus shelters are made of bronze aluminum and glass and should shelter riders from the rain.
Government Workman’s Comp Book Out
Virgin Islands Government employees are advised that your renewal packages for Workman’s Compensation insurance have been mailed. Please pay attention to the new handbook for instructions, rates and codes. If you don’t get a packet in a few days, call 774-4750

St. Thomas St. John Arts Council is calling on all photographers for entries in the first annual Island Photographer’s In Focus art exhibition. The exhibit will be in the Grand Hotel for two weeks then travel to St. Croix and St. John and your photo could be in the exhibit Call 774-8900
Clean UP!
Estate Thomas Tenants and Homeowner’s Association is doing a major clean up effort to remove trash and debris from their area. It’s happening right now at the bottom of the hill at Oswald Harris Court.
National Park Volunteer of the Year
The Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park held their annual meeting on Sunday at Cinnamon Bay and among their business, they named Ruth Barber the National Park Volunteer of the Year. After Hurricane Marilyn she keep the Trunk Bay concession stand open by working off a picnic table, Ruth greeted visitors, handed out brochures and sold souvenirs from her picnic table office. This kind of dedication earns you the title Volunteer of the Year, That’s Ruth Barber making good news.
