Are you anxious to see all 32 square miles St Thomas, a lush tropical paradise? If so, you can either rent a car or take a guided tour. Whatever you do, your explorations will take you up winding hills and along mountainous roadways where it’s guaranteed each breathtaking panorama is more dramatic than the one before. A particularly famous stop is Drake’s Seat — the vantage point where Sir Francis Drake himself used to sit and observe his fleet.

Just below Drake’s Seat is Magens Bay Beach, USVI , touted by National Geographic Magazine as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

To the west of Drake’s Seat, another “must see” is MountainTop. Looming 1,500 feet above sea level, this festive shopping complex offers unparalleled vistas showcasing the US and British Virgin Islands. By the way, it’s also home to the World Famous Banana Daiquiri — made exclusively with Cruzan Rum of the Virgin Islands. A well-known attraction on the other side of town is Paradise Point. At this aptly named attraction, you can take a state-of-the-art tramway 700 feet to look out over Charlotte Amalie Harbor and beyond.

On St Thomas you will find everything from premiere hotels and quaint guesthouses to one-of-a-kind watering holes and fine dining restaurants featuring international cuisine. St Thomas also has a spectacular 18-hole golf course, a marine park, several tennis facilities, boats for charter, and even a bowling center. Historical sites are plentiful, too. The Visitors’ Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce have plenty of flyers, maps and brochures on hand to keep you up-to-date with island attractions and activities.

Let’s take a look at all the fun ways you can see the island:

By air. For a memorable adventure, nothing is quite like hopping aboard a twin-engine plane and taking to the sky for a bird’s eye view of St. Thomas, St. John and the British Virgin Islands. If you prefer, the local helicopter service is also ready to host you on a scenic tour or drop you off on a deserted island for a romantic picnic. Charters are reasonably priced; your hotel concierge will be pleased to arrange your tour.

By car. You can rent a car from one of many companies, check out Budget Rent-a-Car , Discount Car Rental or Dependable Car Rental   you must have a valid driver’s license, but no local permit is required. Just remember to drive on the left. Speed limits are generally 20MPH in populated areas and 35MPH in the country, unless otherwise posted.

Safari bus. While in town, you are bound to see numerous drivers at Emancipation Park and along Main Street offering island tours. Your hotel can also arrange the trip for you. A typical tour is an hour and a half excursion at nominal cost

Taxi. Taxis are equally plentiful and easy to spot in downtown Charlotte Amalie. Your hotel can also arrange a taxi tour. Hiring a driver is a great way to see everything in air-conditioned comfort. If you have a particular itinerary in mind, that’s fine. If not, leave everything to your driver.

Walking. Downtown Charlotte Amalie has dozens of intriguing landmarks and points of interest from Fort Christian to St. Thomas Synagogue to Blackbeard’s Castle to The 99 Steps. (By the way there are actually 103 steps!) Many stopping points are located in hilly areas and along narrow alleyways. Be sure you are wearing comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and sunglasses, too. And don’t forget that camera!
